The Disruption of Education Due to Covid-19

Anthony Kennedy, Dr. Quentin Hunter, School of Business and Communication, Lindsey Wilson College, 210 Lindsey Wilson Street, Columbia KY, 42728

Education propels a society forward as it is through the application of learning that societies improve in all aspects but forced online education due to the COVID-19 pandemic has placed students, parents, and school personnel in a situation where the integrity of education has been questioned. Via literature review, I attempt to determine what really constitutes an education and whether or not the quality of education has been disrupted.  Through Freire’s work and the work of others, I conclude that there are certain elements needed to obtain knowledge, and that knowledge is much different than content.  Where schooling was forced abruptly online, there is reason to believe that content is being delivered rather than knowledge being built and obtained.  I argue for a better way to ensure that even in a completely online education, it is possible to retain the elements that allow for the attainment of knowledge rather than just delivering content.
