The importance of using the Trends in IDT Database

Sumin Bang and Dr. Logan Arrington, Department of Educational Technology and Foundations, University of West Georgia, 1601 Maple Street, Carrollton GA 30118

Background & Guiding Question Technology is an essential tool in teaching and learning. According to educational researchers, during the COVID-19 pandemic, many institutions worldwide have transitioned from face-to-face classes to hybrid learning or fully online courses (Valverde-Berrocoso, Garrido-Arroyo, Burgos-Videla, & Morales-Ceallos, 2020, p. 1). Particularly, expertise from the field of Instructional Design and Technology (IDT), which is "…dedicated to improv[ing] learning and performance and in a variety of settings", provided important information for transforming distance learning (Reiser, 2001, p.57). There are varieties of technological tools and pedagogical innovations within IDT that are used to impact learning. What technological tools were most used within K12 before the pandemic and were they supported following the pandemic? Research Methods To investigate this topic, we utilized secondary data analysis. Using the Trends in Instructional Design and Technology Database, an OER with reports and surveys on the integration and adoption of learning and technology trends across a variety of settings, we explored this question. This OER organizes topics based on trends in the field (e.g., virtual reality, online learning, etc.). Results Through the analysis of these reports, we found that trends such as augmented and virtual reality, educational videos, games, mobile technologies, and online learning (which includes the use of an LMS). Unsurprisingly, many of these same technological tools are still supported and used even more frequently currently with the exception of augmented and virtual reality. Conclusion Through this investigation, we were able to uncover the most frequently used innovations within K12 over the past few years. Overall, we argue for the importance of tools like this database for faculty, students, and those interested in current educational trends. Thus, it helps the audiences to adapt to changing educational environments and enhance their learners' learning experiences in different settings.
