Hip-hop based after school programs serve as an outlet for students, providing them with a safe space to express themselves, build self-esteem, and enhance their English Language Arts skills. “Lyricism 101,” an after school program provided by the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Capital Area (BGCCA), strives to increase students’ academic success and character development through quality programming. A survey administered to teens participating in Lyricism 101 ages 13 through 19 in Albany, Troy, and Rensselaer Counties measures student perceptions of program quality, character development, and academic success in regards to Lyricism 101. Students who disclose higher perceptions of program quality are expected to reveal higher perceptions of character development and academic success. Survey results are analyzed and presented to BGCCA highlighting opportunities to strengthen Lyricism 101 and advance student success.
