Pathways For Change: A Qualitative Look at a Therapeutic Community

Kayla Reid and Dr. Nicole Niebuhr, Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice, The University of West Florida, 11000 University Pkwy, Pensacola, FL 32514

By providing treatment for substance abuse, therapeutic communities offer an alternative to traditional incarceration that also focus on developing prosocial behavior. Practicing therapeutic community standards is essential for a successful program. By comparing the research of De Leon (1995) to the practices of a therapeutic community in Pensacola, FL, the current study utilizes program stakeholder interviews to observe use of best practices. Focus group interviews of program clients are also used to develop themes and gain an understanding of the client perspective of what it takes to be successful. The results of this study will be used to inform future research and policy.
